This unit traces events from the opening of Spanish Texas to Anglo-American colonization in the early nineteenth-century through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. Lesson strategies and documents provide students with the opportunity to study in-depth the Texas War for Independence, the removal of the Cherokee from Texas, and the causes of the Mexican-American War of 1846, presenting a variety of views on the often neglected history of the American Southwest.

Grades 8-12

Lessons
Lesson One: Texas from Colonization to Revolution
Lesson Two: The Republic of Texas and the Cherokee
Lesson Three: The Mexican-American War
Lesson Four: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
