NH157: This unit focuses on the experiences of Muslim women in history. During the long process of the development of Muslim civilization, views toward women, their legal rights, and their social status have evolved. Students are introduced to the sources of Islamic beliefs and ideals (the Qur’an and the Prophetic Tradition) regarding women’s rights and roles, and then compare and contrast those with popular practices in different eras. Lessons cover topics such as women’s involvement in politics, and their contributions to Islamic civilization in the forms of art, architecture, and literature.
